The Retinol Hype

Rachel Eve

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A, but in an alcohol form. Its most commonly used to treat ageing.

Retinol needs to be broken down into retinoic acid before it can enter the nucleas of the skin cell. The retinol found in skincare products needs to be converted several times before it converts to Retinoic acid, the first conversion is into an ester called Retinyl Palmiate. Retinyl Palmiate is the skin specific, storage form of vitamin A and over 90% of the Vitmain A found in a healthy skin is Retinyl Palmiate.

So why use a Retinol?

Actually, I would recommend to initially use Retinyl Palmitate directly!

With R.P being a ‘softer’ form of vitamin A, it means the side effects commonly found with a Retinol product are eliminated. The more / higher the level of Retinyl Palmiate you use, the more the skin can store and the more can convert to Retionic acid.

What are the benefits of Vitamin A?

Vitamin A is the only proven molecule that can truly assist in helping to keep our skin beautiful by communicating with, and reprogramming the cellular function of the skin in order to make cells behave in a younger manner. Vitamin A is known as the skins ‘normaliser’ meaning every skin type can use it, regardless of age or skin concern.

It assists in the promotion of healthy collagen formation by stimulating fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen in the dermis), leaving skin looking firmer and more youthfully radiant. Vitamin A helps to speed up healing, it supports the skin’s immune system and it promotes natural moisturising factors - which means it helps to hydrate the skin effectively, giving it a radiant glow.

How often should I use it?

Our lifestyle and daily sun exposure reduce the natural levels of vitamin A in our skin, and these need to be replenished daily in order to assist our skin to repair and rejuvenate.

In my opinion, when it comes to vitamin A skin care products, no skin care brand understands the importance and benefits of vitamin A better than Environ Skin Care.
